Steel vs timber framing: what builders need to know

Timber has been the default in Australian housing for generations, but light gauge steel has moved well beyond niche. Here's what actually changes when you switch.
Straightness: steel doesn't twist, bow or shrink as it dries, so walls stay straight and plasterers spend less time packing.
Termites: steel isn't food. That doesn't remove every termite management requirement for the building, but the frame itself won't be eaten.
Cost: steel can be competitive with timber once you factor in waste, rework and speed on site. Every job is different, so get a quote on your plans.
